Garage door safety sensors are small devices installed on both sides of the garage door, usually a few inches above the ground. These sensors work together to create an invisible infrared beam across the opening.

If anything breaks this beam while the door is closing, the system immediately stops or reverses the door to prevent impact or injury.

How Do Garage Door Safety Sensors Work?

The system uses two components:

• A transmitter (sends the infrared beam)
• A receiver (detects the beam)

As long as the beam is uninterrupted, the garage door is allowed to close normally. If the beam is blocked, the opener automatically stops the door or reverses its movement for safety.

This simple but effective system is what keeps garage doors from accidentally closing on anything in their path.

Common Problems with Safety Sensors

Garage door sensors can sometimes stop working properly due to a few common issues:

1. Misalignment

If the sensors are not facing each other correctly, the beam cannot connect, and the door will refuse to close. Even small shifts can cause this problem.

2. Dirt or Obstruction

Dust, spider webs, or debris on the sensor lenses can block the infrared signal.

3. Wiring Issues

Loose, damaged, or disconnected wires can interrupt the sensor connection to the opener system.

4. Sunlight Interference

Direct sunlight hitting the sensor can sometimes confuse or disrupt the signal.

5. Physical Damage

Sensors can be damaged by impact, moisture, or aging components.

Signs Your Sensors Are Not Working

You may have a sensor issue if:

• The garage door won’t close with the remote or keypad
• The door starts closing then immediately reverses
• One or both sensor lights are blinking or off
• The door only closes when holding the wall button
