How to Manually Reset Garage Door Opener

A garage door opener may stop responding due to power interruptions, remote issues, or system errors. When this happens, a manual reset can often restore normal operation without needing major repairs. It’s a simple troubleshooting step that helps clear minor glitches and re-sync the system.

1. Disconnect the Power

Start by unplugging the garage door opener from the power outlet or switching off the circuit breaker. This ensures safety while resetting the system and helps clear any temporary electrical faults.

2. Locate the Reset or Learn Button

Look at the main motor unit of the opener. Most models have a button labeled “Learn,” “Program,” or “Reset.” It is usually found on the back or side of the unit and may be hidden behind a light cover.

3. Press and Hold the Reset Button

Press and hold the Learn/Reset button for about 5–10 seconds until the indicator light turns off or starts blinking. This step clears the stored memory of remotes and keypads.

4. Reconnect the Power

Plug the opener back in or turn the circuit breaker on. The system will reboot and return to factory or default settings depending on the model.

5. Reprogram Your Remote and Keypad

After resetting, all remotes, keypads, and vehicle connections need to be reprogrammed. Press the Learn button again, then activate your remote within the pairing window (usually 30 seconds). The opener will confirm the connection with a light flash or click.

6. Test the Garage Door

Once everything is reprogrammed, test the door by opening and closing it several times. Make sure it responds smoothly and consistently.
